Micro-Needling: The Collagen Induction Therapy

From $350

Micro-needling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT), is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses fine needles to create tiny, controlled punctures in the top layer of the skin. This process stimulates the skin's natural wound healing response, which in turn encourages the production of new collagen and elastin fibres. The result is smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

Process

How Micro-Needling Works

The procedure uses a device, often a pen or a roller, equipped with numerous tiny needles. These needles penetrate the skin at a superficial level, creating microscopic channels.

The micro-channels created also allow for significantly better absorption of topical products, such as hyaluronic acid or vitamin C serums, enhancing their effectiveness.

Micro-Injury

The controlled micro-injuries trigger a healing cascade.

Inflammation

Blood flow increases to the treated area, and the body initiates the repair process.

Proliferation

The skin starts to rebuild with new cells, and most importantly, fibroblast cells are stimulated to produce collagen and elastin.

Remodelling

New, strong, and healthy collagen structures are formed, improving the skin's texture and integrity.

Results

Key Benefits of Micro-Needling

Micro-needling can be highly effective in treating a range of skin concerns across the face and body.

Skin Rejuvenation

Reduction of Fine Lines and Wrinkles: By boosting collagen production, the procedure plumps the skin, reducing the appearance of lines.

Improved Skin Texture and Tone: It addresses rough patches and promotes a smoother overall complexion.

Pore Size Reduction: The thickening of the skin's dermal layer can make enlarged pores appear smaller.

Scarring and Pigmentation

Treatment of Acne Scars: Micro-needling breaks down old scar tissue and stimulates the formation of new, smooth tissue. It is particularly effective for atrophic (pitted) scars.

Reduction of Stretch Marks (Striae): It can stimulate collagen and elastin in the affected areas, helping to fade stretch marks over time.

Management of Pigmentation Issues: It can help to break up epidermal pigment (such as mild melasma or sun spots) for a more even skin tone.

Progression

The Micro-Needling Procedure

Micro-needling sets your skin's regeneration in motion immediately, though the visible transformation takes time. Your body works quietly beneath the surface, rebuilding what time has worn away.

Preparation

Before the treatment, a topical anaesthetic cream is typically applied to the area to minimise any discomfort. The skin is thoroughly cleansed.

During the Procedure

The practitioner gently moves the micro-needling device over the treatment area. The depth of the needle penetration is adjustable, allowing the treatment to be customised based on the specific skin concern and the area being treated. A typical session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.

Post-Treatment Care

Immediately following the procedure, the skin will appear red, similar to a moderate sunburn. This usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours

Essential Aftercare:

  • Sun Protection: Strict use of a high SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen is crucial, as the skin is highly sensitive to UV radiation.
  • Hydration: Keep the skin moisturised with gentle, soothing products recommended by your practitioner.
  • Avoid: For 24 hours, avoid vigorous exercise, swimming, saunas, and applying make-up. Avoid active ingredients (like retinoids or strong acids) for several days.

Expected Results and Sessions

Results are not immediate, as collagen production takes time. Initial improvements in texture and brightness can be seen within a week, but the most noticeable results typically appear four to six weeks post-treatment and continue to improve over the following months.  A course of three to six treatments is recommended, spaced four to six weeks apart, to achieve optimal results, depending on the individual's skin condition and goals.
